News> Assistant to winemaker spends two month in France - November 2005
Dirk Joubert, who joined Rust en Vrede in 2000, and who has been the assistant to our wine maker, Ettienne Malan since January 2005, spent the months of September and October in Beaune, France, to acquire new skills and broaden his wine horizon.
The two months were spent partly doing practical work and partly studying at the School for Viticulture in Beaune. The theoretical studies included viticulture, learning about the history of Burgundy and the rest of the French regions. Lectures were presented by French wine makers. The tasting lectures were presented by professors attached to the School of Viticulture.
The practical work included harvest at various farms, mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers as well as field trips as far south as the Rhone valley.
“People were very friendly and wines were good and there is a drive in that region to produce organic wines. Burgundy producers do not irrigate their vines and rely on the forces of nature only. Food was strange but good!” Dirk thoroughly enjoyed his first trip overseas and is looking forward to exploring other wine producing areas in the near future. |
